More job opportunities, affordable grocery options on the way for city residents; Six locations now planned for Washington D.C.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON D.C., November 16, 2011 – Walmart today announced new store locations at Skyland and Fort Totten Square in a continued effort to create jobs and expand affordable grocery options in Washington D.C. Both stores will offer customers a full grocery selection, including fresh produce, a bakery, delicatessen and organic food items as well as a full service pharmacy and a broad assortment of general merchandise.
The retailer now has six stores planned for the District that will create a combined total of 1,800 retail jobs and 600 construction jobs:
Ward 4: Georgia and Missouri Avenue NW
Ward 4: Riggs Road NE and South Dakota Avenue NE
Ward 5: New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road NE
Ward 6: 801 New Jersey Avenue NW
Ward 7: Capitol View (East Capitol Street and 58th)
Ward 7: Good Hope Road and Alabama Avenue SE
“In talking with residents over the past year, it’s clear that a majority think Walmart can be part of the solution in Washington D.C.,” said Henry Jordan, Senior Vice President, Walmart U.S. “Skyland and Fort Totten are two more communities where we think our stores can make a difference; as we move closer to opening our first stores here, we will remain focused on creating economic opportunity and helping to lower the price of groceries for D.C. residents.”
In Ward 7, Walmart will anchor Skyland Town Center, a high-density, mixed use redevelopment project in southeastern Washington D.C. According to the Department of Employment Services, Ward 7 unemployment stands at 17.7 percent, Ward 4 at 8.8 percent and Ward 5 at 14.5 percent. What’s more, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has identified communities east of the Anacostia River as underserved in terms of access to fresh food.
“With Walmart on board, Skyland Town Center takes one significant step closer to becoming a reality,” said Gary D. Rappaport, president and Chief Executive Officer of The Rappaport Companies. “We will continue to work closely with the city to bring an economic boost that includes new housing and shopping choices to one of the more underserved areas of Washington D.C.”
In Ward 4, Walmart will anchor Fort Totten Square, a new, mixed-use development that also will include 350 apartments and be located near the Fort Totten Metro Station in Northeast Washington, D.C.
“Fort Totten Square will be a vital residential and retail community with seamless transit proximity to the Fort Totten Metro Station, providing access to the red, green, and yellow lines,” said Anthony Greenberg, development manager of the project for The JBG Companies. “This is a huge benefit for daily commuters, including students and those that work in the greater area. Further, we believe that Walmart is a terrific amenity for our residents as well as the surrounding neighborhood.”
According to a November 2010 poll, 73 percent of D.C. residents say they are “in favor” of Walmart coming to D.C. and locating one or more stores. At the same time, Washingtonians spent more than $41 million at Walmart stores outside the District in 2010.
